Dental Appliance Recommended Treatment for Sleep Apnea

by Linda Donley, from the offices of James R. Donley, DDS

Have you ever gone out with your spouse or friends to something that you really wanted to see such as a play, movie, symphony, etc. and throughout the evening being nudged by someone because you are sleeping?

By the time the evening is over, you have spent a tidy sum of money and you were too tired to really enjoy the performance. You may feel that you are getting plenty of rest during the night but you find yourself falling asleep in front of your TV.

Sleep apnea is a growing concern for people of all ages and ethnic groups according to current research. Common symptoms are excessive daytime sleepiness, poor memory, morning headaches, fragmented sleep and gastro-esophageal reflux (GERD). People with sleep apnea may suffer from increased blood pressure, heart attacks, strokes, obesity and diabetes as well as increased motor vehicle accidents, increased work-related accidents and depression. These same people may not even be aware that they have an underlying problem. It is estimated that about 90% of sufferers are not being diagnosed or treated. When sleep apnea is left untreated, it can become deadly.

Sleep Apnea must be diagnosed by a medical doctor after a sleep study has been performed. Therefore, physicians have been recommending treatment with a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machine. This machine uses a face mask connected to tubes and blows air down a patient's throat during sleep to keep the airway open.

Many people find the CPAP cumbersome, noisy and uncomfortable or it bothered their spouses. Some are even too embarrassed to use the machine. Studies have been conducted and researchers have found that 25 to 50% of patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) are unable to comply with their CPAP therapy. Thus, these patients are once again putting themselves at risk for more serious health issues.

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine has published parameters stating that oral appliance therapy can be the first line of treatment for people with mild to moderate sleep apnea. It also recommends that these appliances be used with people who suffer severe sleep apnea but cannot tolerate the CPAP. The American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine, of which Dr. Donley is a member, works hand in hand with the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.

Making and fitting oral appliances oral appliances for snoring or sleep apnea must be managed by a trained dentist after proper examination and testing has been done. Both require a prescription from a physician. With sleep apnea another study is required after the oral appliance has been worn for a short time.

Lasik on the Lakeshore

by Shawn Cook, COA and Elective Surgery Coordinator at Shoreline Vision

Have you ever wondered if you are a candidate for Lasik eye surgery? Your options may seem overwhelming. How do you decide where to go? Who will do your surgery?

My name is Shawn and I work at Shoreline Vision. My job is to answer all of your questions regarding Lasik eye surgery. I feel comfortable with my answers because I had Lasik myself seven years ago.

I started wearing glasses when I was in elementary school and in my teen years I started wearing contact lenses. Before making my decision to have surgery, I worked on Shoreline Vision's Lasik team. This is a group of technicians that specialize in doing all of the testing and measurements related to Lasik. I enjoyed working with the patients and had the opportunity to observe several surgeries. Eventually I had Lasik myself in 2003.

No matter how ready you are for life without glasses or contacts, the decision to have Lasik is a big one. You want to know for certain that you will get the safest, most trusted treatment available. Shoreline Vision has kept up with the latest in Lasik technology since it's FDA approval in 1997. The professionals at Shoreline Vision offer Custom Lasik with IntraLase, often referred to as Blade-free Lasik. Darren had Lasik at Shoreline Vision in 2007. He states, "Without question, I would do it again. It was simple and painless. I would recommend the procedure to everyone. Lasik exceeded my expectations. It was a great experience."

Keep it local! You do not have to leave the area to have Lasik. Shoreline Vision is proud to be the first, and at this time the only, Lasik center in Muskegon and the Tri-Cities area to perform Blade-free Lasik. Our surgery center is dedicated exclusively to surgery of the eye. Our doctors frequently co-manage the care of their patients with many of the local optometrists. If you have your eye exams somewhere other than Shoreline Vision, you can have your Lasik surgery at Shoreline and then go back to your optometrist for all of your follow up care after your procedure.

Lasik surgery is an elective procedure and therefore most insurance companies do not cover it. We are offering $500 off the total procedure from now through the end of May. Enjoy your summer with freedom from glasses or contacts. Shoreline Vision works with several different finance companies that offer $0 down and 0% for up to 24 months as an option. Your wait is over! There has never been a better time than now to schedule a Free Lasik evaluation. It is my job to answer your questions and I look forward to hearing from you!

Don't Resist Resistance Training

by Lana Carson, BS Exercise Science, Omni Fitness Club

Are you looking to reduce body fat, drop a clothing size (or two) and firm up a few "flabby" spots?

You know those problem areas, and the endearing names that go with them: "back fat," "muffin top," "bat wings…" and don't even get me started on the inner and outer thighs!.

If you're like most women, you may be thinking that a good walking program this summer is going to help you firm up and trim down. Well, you may burn a few extra calories and improve your cardiovascular fitness but the key to reducing body fat (cellulite), dropping inches, and most important, keeping those inches off, lies in your resistance training.

Now, don't be afraid. Resistance training will not "bulk you up." Cookies and chips bulk you up, not exercise! Most women, unfortunately, avoid resistance exercise because of this reason. They fail to understand the amazing benefits resistance training offers.

First, let's discuss how resistance training affects fat loss.

Simply put, resistance training helps us improve and maintain our muscle tone. Muscle is a very active tissue and requires more calories to maintain and function than fat does. So essentially, the more muscle tone we have, the more calories we burn throughout the day - even at rest! (Metabolism.)

The added benefit of improving our muscle tone is the shape that it adds to the body. Most women that I've worked with have been surprised at the "re-shaping" of their body once they finally added resistance exercises to their workout. They finally achieved the results they had been looking for!

Unfortunately, they spent a lot of time and energy walking on the treadmill and exercising on the elliptical but never questioned why they weren't experiencing the changes they desired.

Does this sound familiar? Are you still battling "flab?" If you admit the answer is yes, then it's time to shake things up and get into some resistance training.

It's time to achieve the results you desire. Just think of how you would feel to have arms that look great in a tank top? How about fitting into your favorite summer dress without the "back fat roll?" And here's a really crazy idea - what about wearing a bathing suit without a cover up? I know that's pushing it but you just never know how great you're going to look until you try.

Come in this summer and experience a whole new look! We'll design personalized resistance training program that's right for you.
