Economic and Fitness Stimulus Plan

by Lana Carson, Nationally Certified Personal Trainer, Omni Fitness Club

I've always enjoyed working in a Fitness Club. The energy that fills the gym is exciting; you can feel it. I think it's the "euphoria of the workout' that permeates the air - the positive energy that flows from people who feel strong, fit and healthy.

You know what I'm talking about and you've experienced it yourself. Remember the last time you did a little exercise? How did you feel? I bet you felt energized, rejuvenated and proud of your accomplishment. Those feelings are real, they have energy and they can change your life!

Now, more than ever, people are looking for something to feel good about. We cannot control economic conditions, unemployment, corporate bail outs (negative influences) but we can control the way we respond to them. One of the most important things we can do during uncertain times is to take care of ourselves through regular exercise.

Research shows that during stressful times, people who exercise regularly not only feel better physically, they report a greater sense of control over their daily lives. Many medical studies are proving that regular exercise helps people lead more productive lives. In fact, a growing number of people who have lost their jobs or are sensing layoffs, have started exercising because they want to look and feel their best when they go out and interview for new positions! (Sitting around, watching TV and putting on weight will not present you with a new job opportunity!)

Once again, exercise proves to be a powerful agent. It strengthens us when we are weak, makes us flexible in an ever changing world and give us the endurance to keep going. Let's face it, it's "survival of the fittest" - how fit are you?

Implant Retained Dentures

by Monica J. Lakatos, D.D.S., Northshore Dental Associates

People who wear complete dentures tend to lose the bone that supports the denture over years of time. The bone, especially that of the lower jaw, constantly deteriorates without natural teeth in place.

This loss of bone makes it difficult for those with dentures to achieve a good fit. People tend to keep their dentures in place by positioning their lip, tongue, and cheek muscles to hold their teeth in place. It is unstable and causes problems for people to function in this less than ideal state. Some people master this quite well, but for those who cannot there are solutions.

If your dentures move excessively when you eat, speak, cough, or sneeze, there are answers to your problems.

Dental implants are commonly used to replace missing teeth. But they also can be used to stabilize dentures. A couple of implants in the bone can create a button or snap to which the denture can lock. With a denture locked in place and the fear of it moving is removed, a person can have increased confidence, better nutrition and improved facial esthetics.

When people know they have a denture that will not fall out of their mouth, the facial muscles relax, leading to an improved facial appearance. Implant retained dentures also cause fewer sore spots because the denture is supported by bone, not soft tissue.

Implants can be retrofitted into an existing denture or planned with the initial placement of a denture. If you are one of the many people for whom dentures can literally be a pain, ask your dentist if an implant retained denture would work for you.
